Positive energy, genuine affection in Sonia's dinner: AICC President Rahul

Leaders of 19 parties made it to the dinner hosted by Sonia Gandhi that was seen to be aimed at consolidating opposition unity in parliament and beyond, particularly the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, and senior Congress leaders such as Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mallikarjun Kharge, Ahmed Patel, AK Antony, and Randeep Singh Surjewala were also present at the dinner.

Though the Congress party saying that the dinner should not be looked through a prism of politics, it could be guessed that inviting opposition party leaders for dinner is a first step forward towards building a united opposition to break the winning streak of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Indian Union Muslim League 's P. K. Kunhalikutty, Jose K. Mani of the Kerala Congress (Mani) party, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik's Babulal Marandi, the Revolutionary Socialist Party's N. K. Premachandran, veteran socialist leader Sharad Yadav, Rashtriya Lok Dal's Ajit Singh and Janata Dal-Secular's Kupendra Reddy were also present, as was Hindustan Awam Morcha leader Jiten Ram Manjhi, who quit the National Democratic Alliance last month. He had earlier said, "Will not be able to attend the dinner as the Assembly session in Tamil Nadu was beginning from March 15". "Fabulous dinner tonight hosted by UPA Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi Ji. Much political talk but much more important - tremendous positive energy, warmth and genuine affection", Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

Both the government and the Congress party blamed each other for the non-functioning of the Parliament.

He also labelled the Congress a "falling, failing and faltering organisation" and attacked it for not following parliamentary traditions and using Parliament as a mere platform to give speeches.

The Centre wants the ongoing Budget Session to run its full course till April 6 and transact maximum business, parliamentary affairs minister Ananth Kumar said on Tuesday, aiming to put an end to speculations that the session which has failed to transact any business in its second leg, may be curtailed.
