Philadelphia Scores 4 Nominees For Prestigious James Beard Awards

In the regional chef competition for Best Chef: South, Nina Compton of Compère Lapin (and the soon to open Bywater American Bistro) is nominated, along with Slade Rushing of Brennan's and Kristen Essig and Michael Stoltzfus of Coquette.

Rhode Island's other semifinalists this year were Al Forno's Johanne Killeen for Best Chef in a national category and Champe Speidel of Persimmon.

The popular deli and bakery has advanced as a final nominee for a James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Service. Zingerman's is the only one of those semifinalists to be a finalist, Melody Baetens of The Detroit News. Pondicheri chef-owner Anita Jaisinghani had also been named a semifinalist.

The awards, considered the Oscars of the culinary world, will be announced May 7 in Chicago.

Also for the fifth year, Donald Link is in the running for the group's Outstanding Chef award.

Outstanding Baker: Perennial nominees Belinda Leong and Michel Suas of B. Patisserie in San Francisco are again finalists for this award.
