Pellegrino sacked: Southampton target Marco Silva as next manager

Southampton have won just one of their last 17 league matches and have only eight games to save their top-flight status.

Pellegrino had replaced the now-Leicester City manager Claude Puel last summer after the Frenchman was dismissed despite a strong top-half finish and a League Cup runners-up medal.

Southampton hope to have their new boss in place before facing Wigan on Sunday for a place in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Vice-Chairman Lees Reed is said to be keen on bringing Ridgers to the south coast and will be putting his name in the mix alongside the likes of Mark Hughes and Marco Silva.

The Argentine was relieved of his duties as manager after going 17 games with just one win.

It is Hughes, though, who is the early favourite to be handed the task of rescuing the club from their parlous situation only a couple of months after he was sacked by Stoke City.

Dramatic changes to Premier League relegation odds after Saturday matches

Hughes was sacked by Stoke in January with the team in the Premier League's relegation places.

"From the beginning I tried to do my best every single day, I tried to give back to the club and tried to represent the club with pride", the letter began.

Of this season's contrasting fortunes, Pellegrino said: "We have been living a hard season for many reasons".

"The manager is the face of a lot of decisions and actions, but I always tried to put the club first with my technical staff and the board behind me", Pellegrino added. "I have enjoyed an unbelievable experience and I know that Southampton has everything required to move forward".

The south-coast club made a decision to act two days after losing at Newcastle 3-0, after which Pellegrino said some of his players "gave up".

Southampton's predicament, and the fact that Hughes is the strongest candidate that ticks their boxes, means that the 54-year-old manager holds some leverage over the club he played for more than 50 times in the 1990s.
