Mnangagwa Says Mugabe Tendered Resignation, Not Removed Violently By Zimbabwe Army

Four months after being forced to leave the political scene, former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe has broken his silence in his first TV interview, describing his departure from office in November as a coup d'etat.

Mnangagwa Speaking for the first time in a television interview on Thursday night since his resignation in November 2017, Mugabe said Mnangagwa came to power via a coup and that he was willing to discuss with him to resolve the matter.

Zimbabwe's former leader Robert Mugabe said he never thought new President Emmerson Mnangagwa would turn against him and denounced Mnangagwa's move to oust him a year ago as a coup, in an interview broadcast on Thursday. "We must undo this disgrace which we have imposed on ourselves, we don't deserve it. Zimbabwe doesn't deserve it", Mugabe said.

"I don't hate Emmerson, I brought him into government". Known as "The Crocodile", Mnangagwa fought alongside Mugabe in the country's liberation war that ended with the proclamation of the Republic of Zimbabwe in 1980.

Zimbabwe left the Commonwealth in 2003 after the former President, Robert Mugabe, disagreed with the bloc's decision to suspend Zimbabwe indefinitely at the Abuja Summit.

Mr Mambeu weighed in saying Mr Mugabe must be suffering from amnesia and he must understand that Zimbabwe had had enough of him and President Mnangagwa was legitimately appointed to replace him to avoid a vacuum.

Despite widespread jubilation following the army's seizure of power, many Zimbabweans are now disenchanted by what they see as a mere changing of the guard at the top of Zimbabwe's authoritarian system.

"I never thought. [Mnangagwa] would be the man who turned against me", said Mugabe.

Mugabe resigned from his position following a short army takeover, during which he was put under house arrest.

"Today he appears on foreign media which he banned and claims he must be invited to a transitional process for Zimbabwe #RetireInPeaceBob".

When asked about his regime's human rights abuses, Mugabe admitted, "We have been accused of that and on that side, yes some errors were done".
