Karti Chidambaram Gets Interim Relief From ED Arrest in INX Media Case

The court has ordered Karti to cooperate with the investigating agencies, and to not fly out of the country until the next hearing.

On Friday, the CBI moved two more applications, seeking court permission to confront Karti Chidambaram with his Chartered Accountant S. Bhaskararaman, arrested last month.

Unperturbed with the high court's order, Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who is appearing for both the CBI and the ED in the case, told the trial court that Karti's custodial interrogation by the CBI was needed to confront him with the recovery of fresh incriminating documents.

Karti has been granted the Interim Protection from the Delhi High court after being denied yesterday.

The court further asked the CBI court, which would hear CBI's plea for extension of Karti Chidambaram's remand, to pass an order without being influenced by the high court's view. The CD is being sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory for forensic examination.

Defence lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi had opposed the CBI plea, mocking at the agency for it failure to locate the registered office address of Advantage Strategic in Kumbukkan Road in Chennai.

"Karti Chidambaram on Friday told a Delhi court that the CBI was meting out inhuman treatment" to him in its custody which caused his blood pressure to shoot up.

The apex court had on February 23 refused to stay the summons issued by the ED against Karti.

Karti Chidambaram was confronted with Indrani Mukherjea in Mumbai last week.

Earlier, he sought bail from the court alleging that the CBI was acting at the behest of the Centre to malign the reputation of his father during whose tenure Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance was granted to the INX Media group.

According to INX Media co-owners Indrani and Peter Mukerjea, now involved in the murder case of Indrani's daughter Sheena Bora, they paid Karti Chidambaram $7 lakh to secure the foreign investment clearance. Chidambaram and wife Nalini was present during the entire proceedings in the court and judge allowed them 15 minutes of interaction with their son.

The FIPB unit of the finance ministry had not only granted illegal approval but also misinformed the investigation wing of the Income Tax Department, it had alleged.
