Judge rules $560M Powerball victor can remain anonymous

The winning ticket in the January 6 market was sold at the Reeds Ferry Market in that town.

The mystery woman who won the almost $560 million Powerball jackpot in New Hampshire two months ago can remain anonymous, according to a Granite State judge who found her right to privacy outweighs any public interest in her identity.

She learned from attorneys subsequently, however, that New Hampshire would in turn treat her right to privacy as forfeited under the state's Right to Know law. He ruled, however, that her hometown can be released publicly.

"She was jumping up and down", Shaheen said of his client's reaction to Temple's ruling.

"The Court has no doubts whatsoever that should Ms. Doe's identity be revealed, she will be subject to an alarming amount of harassment, solicitation and unwanted communications", the judge's resolution states.

However, Temple noted that nothing in his order could be interpreted to prevent the lottery commission or its employees from "processing, maintaining, or accessing Ms. Doe's ticket in the normal course of business".

Wounded soldier shoots dead knife attacker outside Iranian ambassador's residence in Vienna
A knife attacker was shot dead outside the Iranian ambassador's house in Vienna after he lunged at a guard, police said. The official added that the soldier, who is from the Tyrol region of Austria , had been treated in hospital.

According to Doe's civil complaint, she visited the commission's website after learning she won and followed the agency's instructions for redeeming her prize, signing the back of the ticket and printing her address and phone number.

The woman could have remained anonymous had she established a trust, then had a trustee sign the ticket, the lawyers argued.

New Hampshire Lottery Executive Director Charlie McIntyre said in a statement that the commission was "expecting a different outcome", and that it will discuss "appropriate next steps" with the New Hampshire attorney general's office. Attorneys for the victor have said she plans to donate between $25 million to $50 million during her lifetime, beginning with donations of $150,000 to Girls Inc. and $33,000 apiece to three chapters of End 68 Hours of Hunger.

The judge also rejected the lottery commission's argument that the woman's name should be revealed to assure the public she was a "bona fide" lottery participant and "real" victor. As part of their bid to keep her name out of the news, Doe's attorneys created a trust to shield her identity and asked the commission not to identify her.

Last week she received just over $264m - her winnings minus taxes and bearing in mind winners get a smaller amount if they opt for a lump sum payment. They said she would give $150,000 to Girls Inc. and $33,000 apiece to three chapters of End 68 Hours of Hunger in the state.

Doe has pledged to donate around $25 million to $50 million of the largess to charity over time.
