'Highly likely' Russian Federation will seek to influence 2018 USA vote

USA intelligence agencies determined that Russian Federation sought to influence the 2016 presidential election to boost then-Republican candidate, President Donald Trump. Dan Coats, the Director of the U.S. National Intelligence said that as quoted by CNS News. That timetable could slide, the official cautioned, as the administration is working to coordinate the measures through the State and Treasury departments.

The indictment prompted a wave of partisan finger-pointing, as Republicans accused the Obama administration of having been too soft on Russian Federation, while Democrats excoriated the Trump administration for not taking decisive steps to punish or repudiate Moscow's efforts to interfere in an American election. "We'll counteract it very strongly", Trump said. "He has said 'I assume you're doing your job, all of you who head up these agencies relative to cyber". It's called paper. Not highly complex computers. "There was some prodding and proving that went on at state levels".

Moscow denies seeking to meddle in the US vote. Admiral Mike Rogers, the current NSA director, told the panel Trump had not granted him authority to disrupt Russian hacking.

Mnuchin has repeatedly said that sanctions are coming. "Clearly what we have done hasn't been enough".

Coats said that as soon as next week, he expects the U.S. Treasury to announce sanctions against 13 Russians accused by Special Counsel Robert Mueller of interference in the 2016 election.

Coats did say, however, that he has talked to the president about cyberthreats generally. The indictment issued by the US special counsel charged them with running a huge but hidden social media trolling campaign aimed in part at helping Trump win. The criminal charges are also the first against Russians believed to have secretly worked to influence the outcome. It's a "high priority" led by the offices of Thomas Bossert, assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, and Rob Joyce, cybersecurity coordinator for the National Security Council.

Coats suggested that sanctions also could be imposed on additional individuals as well.

The committee voted during Tuesday's hearing to confirm Nakasone to his new position.

The letter from Senators Amy Klobuchar and Jeanne Shaheen followed a series of Reuters reports saying that several major global technology providers have allowed Russian authorities to hunt for vulnerabilities in software deeply embedded across the USA government. Among the entities being considered for sanctions is the Internet Research Agency, a Kremlin-linked Russian troll group, the official said.

A law passed past year by the US Congress imposed sanctions on Russian Federation, but the Trump administration has yet to formally designate targets for the measure.

Democrats also have criticized Trump for not doing more to punish Russian Federation for its activities during the 2016 election.
