Florida prosecutors seeking death penalty in school shooting

Prosecutors are planning on seeking the death penalty for the man who killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last month, according to court filings.

Cruz has another formal arraignment scheduled for Wednesday, during which he is expected to be arraigned on an additional 17 counts of first-degree murder.

A separate motion seeks the removal of the State Attorney's Office from the case because Satz signed the same agreement.

Cruz's public defender Howard Finkelstein is not contesting his client's guilt, and is instead offering to have him plead guilty in exchange for life in prison. The announcement doesn't negate the ability for a plea deal to be reached.

Cruz gunned down at least 17 people on February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

"Because that's what this case is about". Not, should he go free?

The Bruins should win this game, and then move to the first round, where they will have a chance against the Florida Gators . The Bonnies won 13 straight before falling to Davidson in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament .

"Live forever in jail or die - I don't care", Mr Jaffe said in an email.

Cruz now "stands mute" before the charges, having withdrawn a written "not guilty" plea after being indicted by the grand jury. "We are not saying he is not guilty but we can't plead guilty while death is still on the table", Finkelstein said.

Nikolas Cruz appears in court for a status hearing before Broward Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He says Cruz will rot in hell no matter when it is that he arrives there. Anthony Borges, 15, was shot five times. After surgery, his condition was upgraded to fair, his attorney and the hospital said.

The Parkland massacre has sparked a wave of student activism, renewed political tension over gun control and even forced the normally pro-firearm friendly Florida Legislature to pass a law tightening access to the weapons. The commission has the power to ask voters to approve changes to the state's constitution.

Borges has filed a notice of intent to sue the school district and the Broward Sheriff's Office for negligence and failing to prevent the shooting.

"You can help defeat this challenge", Mr Montalto told commissioners.
