Facebook autocomplete suggests NSFW results, shocks users

As for what happened, Facebook released a statement to explain the matter to users. However, even after they removed suggestions hinting about possible child porn on the social media platform, the search continued to behave unusually.

The company does not permit sexually explicit imagery on its platform.

Although Facebook definitely shoulders some of the blame when it comes to these offensive "video of" suggestions, it turns out that the users may be more to blame.

The Guardian reports that social media giant Facebook has issued an apology for recent search suggestions that showed users vulgar terms related to pornography.

Earlier this month, the company asked some United Kingdom users: "How would you handle the following: a private message in which an adult man asks a 14-year-old girl for sexual pictures".

Russian hackers targeted U.S. energy assets, officials say
They said the strikes accelerated in late 2015, at the same time the Russian interference in the American election was underway. He said whether the corporate networks of any nuclear plants had been hacked was a question for the U.S. government.

Jonathon Morgan, the founder of New Knowledge, a company that tracks the spread of misinformation online, said it is possible that Facebook's algorithm was manipulated in a coordinated attempt to alter its search predictions.

While it may be normal for Facebook to revise their community standards at certain points in time, the fact that a question on a survey would propose that the sharing of a video of child grooming would in any way be appropriate is certainly concerning. Google also faced similar criticisms due to the autocomplete feature, which can be offensive to religion, gender, or race.

In 2016 Google, the world's dominant search engine, had to change its autocomplete search tool when users received offensive results after looking up information about women and Jewish people.

"Search suggestions are based on search queries, not actual content", Morgan said.
