Edin Dzeko powers Roma into UEFA Q/finals

Roma knock Shakhtar Donetsk out of the Champions League on away goals thanks to Tuesday night's 1-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico.

Cengiz Under's strike and a string of Alisson saves had kept Roma in the tie in the 2-1 away first-leg defeat, allowing Eusebio Di Francesco's men to edge to victory in the second leg and reach the quarter-finals despite a dismal display in which Dzeko's victor was scarcely deserved.

Roma overcame a poor first-half performance to beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 on Tuesday and reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League on the away goals rule after a 2-2 aggregate score.

The Serie A outfit were back in the contest just seven minutes after the restart, however, when the visiting defence was caught out by Kevin Strootman's ball over the top and Dzeko ran through on goal to slot under Pyatov into the back of the net.

Eusebio Di Francesco's side are the second Italian team to advance to the quarter-finals after Juventus, with the draw for the last eight taking place on Friday.

The visitors had a player sent off near the end of the match when Ivan Ordets pulled Dzeko to the ground. Substitute Wissam Ben Yedder scored twice after coming on in the second half, with Romelu Lukaku pulling a goal back for United. "I don't have a preferred opponent: they are all strong teams, but we will play to win against anyone".

Shakhtar came close to extending their overall advantage when the Roma defender Alessandro Florenzi headed a floated free-kick into the box inches wide of his own far post.

The home side came out with renewed objective in the second half and Dzeko delighted their vocal fans when he broke the deadlock with a trademark clinical finish.

That sending-off led to tensions spilling over, with Shakhtar's Facundo Ferreyra picking up a booking for shoving a ballboy over an advertising board. "We managed to do something Roma hadn't in 10 years, so going forward to play against the best makes us all very proud".

Dzeko was given a standing ovation when he was substituted in the final minute.
