Dead, 1 Injured in Shooting at UAB-Hospital Highlands

Two people - a victim and the shooter - are dead Wednesday evening after a man shot two employees at UAB Hospital-Highlands on 11th Avenue South in Birmingham.

Nancy Swift, 63, was a nursing supervisor.

Police in Alabama say that a "work conflict" was at the root of a shooting at a hospital in Birmingham that left two people dead and one person wounded.

One victim died, while the second is said to be in stable condition, according to Williston.

The victims are believed to have been on the second floor.

Birmingham Police Public Information Officer Peter Williston described the shooting as an "employee relation issue" during a morning press conference. The order was lifted around 7:45 p.m.

The male shooter was found with a self-inflicted gunshot in a room on the third floor's emergency wing. Authorities didn't release his name, and Steris referred questions to police.

Capt. H.R. Waton of Birmingham Fire and Rescue told reporters all three individuals involved were critically injured, according to the news station. The investigation will be led by the Birmingham Police Department.

The shootings forced the hospital to cancel all of Thursday's scheduled surgeries.

Officials say the hospital has metal detectors that were in use, but they didn't explain how the shooter entered the building with a gun.
