Cumhuriyet journalists released with restrictive terms

Silivri - The trial resumed on Friday of staff from Turkey's opposition Cumhuriyet newspaper seen as a test of press freedom under Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, with two suspects now approaching their 500th day behind bars.

Cumhuriyet's editor-in-chief Murat Sabuncu and investigative reporter Ahmet Şik were ordered to be freed by the judge after a day-long hearing. But Turkey's Court of Cassation, known as the Yargitay, ruled that Dundar should go on trial on far more serious charges of "providing information for the objective of espionage", the state-run Anadolu news agency reported This would see him face a jail term of between 15-20 years, it said. A total of 19 of the suspects were already being held in jail ahead of the verdict. Other defendants were convicted of membership in a "terror organization" and were given prison sentences ranging between six and seven-and-a-half years, Anadolu Agency reported. It is still not clear when the final verdict will be announced. Both were however allowed to go free on the condition they did not leave Turkey.

However, Cumhuriyet said that its attorney, Akin Atalay, was remanded in custody until the next hearing, on March 16.

Gulen, a longtime rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, now resides in exile in the United States.

However they remain under charge and on trial.

"I prefer you to be frustrated because frustration will help us stand tall. today is not a day to be happy". I believe that I will be acquitted in the end, you should believe it too.

Turkish authorities accuse Cumhuriyet staff of supporting Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Ankara believes headed the coup attempt, as well as the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the ultra-left Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front.

The Turkish authorities have detained dozens of journalists in the crackdown after the failed coup.

Rights group Amnesty International said on Twitter that the ruling was "long overdue" and called for the release of all jailed journalists in Turkey.

The Istanbul court in a surprise manner at midnight on Friday chose to release the two Cumhuriyet journalists.

Supporters say the charges are absurd, noting that the outlawed groups cited in the indictment are themselves at odds with each other.

Police detained eight members of Gulen's network and were looking for two more in a third operation focused on southern Turkey's Mersin and four other provinces, the agency said. Dundar has fled Turkey and is now based in Germany.
