Of the counties surrounding Philadelphia, Chester ranks first in health outcomes, Montgomery is ranked fourth, Bucks is ranked seventh and DE is ranked 49th.

In New Mexico, Los Alamos is the healthiest county, Bernalillo County comes in at No. 8, and Rio Arriba was ranked the least healthy.

The nationwide County Health rankings compiled by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute placed McLean as the 23rd healthiest county in the state, down four spots from past year.

"I think that overall, Douglas County is still in good shape", said Dr. Gianfranco Pezzino, senior fellow and strategy team leader with KHI. Locally, Tioga County ranked 40, Steuben at 45, Schuyler at 46, and Chemung at 49.

Chris Tilden, community health director with the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department, said the department has looked closely at these disparities but has had difficulty because of sample sizes. It's also based on health behaviors (for example, diet and exercise, alcohol and drug use, and tobacco use), social and economic factors (education, employment, income, family and social support), the physical environment (air and water quality, housing and transportation), and clinical care. 13 of Florida's 67 counties in health outcomes, with Flagler one spot behind.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has released their annual findings.

The percentage of adults age 20 and over reporting no leisure-time physical activity for Beaufort County was 16 percent, compared to the state's 25 percent. "The data in the rankings serves as an indicator for counties to determine the effectiveness of their community interventions and other potential areas of need".

The foundation examines health outcomes, access to medical care and socioeconomic factors such as child poverty rates and single-parent households. In Lancaster, the average is 7 percent, but broken out by race it's 6 percent of white babies, 10 percent of Hispanic babies and 11 percent of black babies.

"For smoking we have some smoking initiatives that we're working with other area agencies and businesses to work on smoke free policies", said Jones.

"Once we understand what the gaps are, at least we know where to shoot, but it requires not just government involvements, it requires a lot of different stakeholders".
