Central Intelligence Agency whistleblower 'sickened' by Trump's new Central Intelligence Agency pick Gina Haspel

President Trump used a tweet over the weekend to fire Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Our account of Haspel's actions was drawn in part from declassified agency cables and CIA-reviewed books which referred to the official overseeing Zubaydah's interrogation at a secret prison in Thailand as "chief of base".

"As a member of the United States Senate, we hope that they take that role very seriously and get accurate information before they peddle it out in front of the American people", Sanders said at her daily press briefing, singling Paul out for speaking "off of incorrect information".

"The acts of torture described in the Senate Intelligence Committee's report violated the God-given human dignity inherent in all people and were unequivocally wrong", stated Bishop Oscar Cantú of Las Cruces, who was chair of the US bishops' worldwide justice and peace committee at the time. But she will likely face scrutiny for the years she spent supervising a secret Central Intelligence Agency prison known for using waterboarding and other "enhanced interrogation techniques" widely described as torture. That segment also quoted Paul's contention that Haspel had expressed "joyful glee at someone who's being tortured".

Had Haspel not (allegedly) participated in the destruction of the most compelling evidence about the torture of Zubaydah, of course, she would have not been accused of being involved in it in the first place.

But the site Thursday retracted the claims.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Haspel must explain the nature and extent of her involvement in the CIA's interrogation program.

A spokesman for Paul said the retraction did not change the senator's stance.

ProPublica had reported past year that she ran the facility in Thailand during the dark period of American political life when Palestinian-born Abu Zubaydah was tortured, though the outlet corrected itself Thursday night and said that she had not yet arrived during that episode. Then-CIA Director John Brennan in 2013 named her deputy director of National Clandestine Service, but she was denied a permanent promotion in the face of congressional opposition.

Asean leaders - including Mr Hun Sen, Myanmar's de facto leader Suu Kyi and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc - are in Sydney for the talks.

"An honest explanation for undermining @realDonaldTrump choices for national-security team would be nice for once", Cotton wrote. Its reporting on Haspel had been cited by a number of media outlets - including NPR, which has collaborated with ProPublica on other stories in the past.

If they stay opposed, and all 47 Democrats and two independents join them, Haspel's nomination could be in trouble.

Meanwhile, Haspel, the incoming CIA director who will replace Pompeo, has a more hawkish record when it comes to Russian Federation but faces an uphill Senate confirmation battle because of her role in the CIA's torture program and her oversight of an agency black site. He is founder of the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights, and previous year asked German prosecutors to issue an arrest warrant for Haspel for her role in the torture program.

Following Haspel's nomination, Republican Senator John McCain sent a tweet saying, "The torture of detainees in USA custody during the last decade was one of the darkest chapters in American history".

"One of the main things to watch as he goes to the State Department, where he'll be a critical part of making and implementing U.S. policy around the world, is whether his views stay the same, or if he falls in line with the president", he said.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) has been hitting out at some of her fellow Republicans over their criticism of the torture program that was run during the Bush administration, where her father served as vice president.

The announcement came after months of tension between Trump and Tillerson, who were frequently at odds over the US's foreign policy as it relates to North Korea, Iran, and other global hotbeds.

Paul said he "couldn't disagree more" and said that "in the years following 9/11, we let fear get the better of our responsibility to liberty".
