"We have an emergency on our hands", said Anne Schuchat, acting director of the CDC, according to NPR. "This fast-moving epidemic affects both men and women, and people of every age". There were variations in these rates among states in the Northeast and Southeast regions, with some states seeing significant increases and others experiencing nonsignificant decreases.

The overall increase in opioid overdoses seen in hospital emergency rooms between the third quarter of 2016 and the third quarter of 2017 occurred across the nation. In 16 states there were 119,198 emergency department visits (26.7 per 10,000 visits) that were suspected opioid-involved overdoses.

That survey showed an increase of 29.7 percent in 52 jurisdictions in 45 states between July through September 2016 and the same period in 2017, according to the report. In Kentucky, the CDC's analysis showed a 15 percent drop in overdoses.

Alert communities to rapid increases in overdoses seen in EDs and coordinate an informed and timely response. He also calls for increasing the availability of naloxone, which reverses the effects of overdoses, and working with law enforcement. It is typical to see overdose increases at the start of the month, when many people get their paychecks, but the spikes could also be due to growing fentanyl use, he said.

Emergency departments can provide naloxone - a drug that combats overdoses - and recommend treatment to patients, making it an important frontline in the nation's opioid epidemic, the report said.
