Broncos To Land Case Keenum

Quarterback Case Keenum is plans to sign with the Broncos when National Football League free agency officially opens Wednesday, ESPN.com reported early Tuesday, citing unidentified sources.

Cousins' market will likely come down to the Vikings, Jets or possibly the Cardinals.

Keenum's teams are 20-18 in his games as a starter and he made both of his career playoff starts this past January for the Vikings.

The Vikings have no quarterbacks under contract for 2018 but have been linked with both Kirk Cousins and Drew Brees, who has yet to be re-signed by the Saints.

The 30-year-old Keenum is considered the second-best QB available on the open market.

Keenum, of course, comes off a season which saw him complete 67.6 percent of his passes with 3,547 yards and 22 touchdowns.

With a sparkling new stadium, stacked roster and head coaching stability, the Vikings jumped to the head of the line of potential suitors for Cousins.

At the scouting combine, two weeks before the start of free agency, Elway did compare the "fluid" nature of chasing a quarterback in free agency this year to the pursuit of Manning.

Manning retired a month after Denver's 24-10 win over Carolina in Super Bowl 50, and Elway brought in veteran Mark Sanchez, then moved up to grab Lynch in the first round of the draft.

The Broncos had three quarterbacks start games this past season - Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch and Brock Osweiler - but it was a bumpy ride on offense as the Broncos were among the league leaders in turnovers and offensive coordinator Mike McCoy was sacked in November.

According to James Palmer of NFL Network, Denver has picked up the option for wide receiver Demaryius Thomas. That being said, we can get better in a lot of areas, like protecting the quarterback, continuing to run the football better and to play dominant defense.

That included choosing among the draft prospects that include Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield and others. "That is what we are working on".

And while the Broncos do need a new quarterback, is Keenum the answer?

"I still think we're not too far away". There's a good chance the always-aggressive Elway wants to take another swing at the quarterback position in this year's draft. In doing so, it triggers the last two years of his deal. That doesn't all go on the players.
