Austin rocked by 3rd explosion in 11 days

An Austin teenager was killed and several others injured Monday when two packages left on doorsteps exploded, marking the second and third deadly package explosions in the Texas capital in two weeks.

In Austin, Texas, a suspicious bomb package is reported to have killed a teen and injured a nearby woman, with police believing that a second, unsafe package could be nearby.

Manley says investigators believe that attack and one earlier Monday that killed a 17-year-old boy and injured a woman in her 40s are linked to a March 2 package bombing that killed a 39-year-old man in another neighborhood.

"We're just acknowledging and we're looking at any possible motivations that would link these two cases together so that we can put this case together, understanding the victimology and who might these individuals had known and had in common", Manley said.

Police say the package that arrived at House's home was not delivered through the U.S. Postal Service or any other delivery service. The March 2 blast was initially investigated as a suspicious death, but is now viewed as a homicide.

Police also have not decided if these are hate crimes, but said that's a real possibility of the victims' races.

Bomb-sniffing dogs were reportedly at the scene of the explosion Monday morning and investigating nearby houses.

The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms said a national response team would join Austin police in the investigation.

"I want to assure all Texans, and especially those in Austin, that local, state and federal law enforcement officials are working diligently to find those responsible for these heinous crimes", Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement.

A second explosion occurred in southeastern Austin Monday midday, close to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

The police chief first suggested that the blasts could constitute a hate crime after Monday's first bombing.

Police are warning the public to not open any packages they aren't expecting or any that look suspicious.

Residents meanwhile have been warned to avoid opening unexpected items left at their doorsteps and to report anything suspicious to police.

All residents of Austin should be careful about packages, Manley said. Authorities said earlier that the woman's injuries were life-threatening, but Manley says she'll survive.

The explosions happened far from the main events of the huge festival, which brings about 400,000 visitors to Austin each year. It was taken into the kitchen, where it exploded, Manley said.

"Upon arrival... what we found was an explosion had occurred inside the residence".

"This type of crime will not be tolerated" in Austin, Police Chief Brian Manley said.

Police did not immediately identify the teenager who was killed.
