Zuma crisis: Police raid Gupta family house

According to eNCA, sources have said that the raid is related to the Vrede dairy project in the Free State, where the Guptas have been accused of allegedly siphoning R220 million meant to benefit poor farmers.

Three people from the wealthy, Indian-born family were arrested earlier in the day, the local media reported. This is the power of persistent, professional, independent journalism.

The Gupta business family has been a flashpoint for national anger over corruption in state enterprises during Mr Zuma's tenure.

The ANC, which replaced Zuma as party leader in December with Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, ordered him to step down as president on Tuesday.

ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule said the party's national executive was split on when Zuma should step down, although the party expected him to respond to the order by Wednesday.

"I have therefore come to the decision to resign as president of the republic with immediate effect", Zuma said. A senior judicial source said police expected to arrest up to seven more people and that Gupta family members would be among them.

They have a close relationship with President Jacob Zuma and his family. "To us the law is blind, it does not matter who it is".

The family's also been implicated in the theft of millions of rand from the Estina Dairy Project.

A lawyer for the Gupta family said he could not comment on the raid because he had yet to see the search warrant.

Reports from Saxonwold residents suggested that vehicles belonging to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation arrived at the Gupta compound in the upmarket Johannesburg suburb at around 6.30am.

A police officer at the compound blocked off access to the street, saying: "This is a crime scene".

A group of officers, some in police gear, later emerged from the home. They must leave us alone.

Police also raided the Guptas' Oakbay holding company in Johannesburg's Sandton financial district, according to a security guard outside the building.
