Winter Olympics: Men's downhill event rescheduled

Winter Olympics: Men's downhill event rescheduled

"Due to the strong wind and unfavorable forecast for today, the men's downhill is postponed", the International Ski Federation (FIS) announced.

The event was supposed to begin at 9 p.m. ET Saturday (11 a.m. Sunday morning local time).

The blue-ribbon event, which traditionally opens the Alpine skiing at the Winter Olympics, will now take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday in place of the Super G with the other men's speed race shifting to Friday.

The downhill training for the men's combined event scheduled for February 12 has also been cancelled.

Sung Baik-you, the spokesman for the PyeongChang 2018 organising committee, said the decision was made for the safety of the athletes.

"The wind is always stupid for us because firstly it makes the race a bit unfair and secondly it also makes it risky", said Germany's Thomas Dressen.

"We kind of expected this downhill to be postponed due to wind, but at the same time the guys were charged up and ready to go", USA men's head coach Sasha Rearick said.

Pyeongchang Games organizers, including chief race director Markus Waldner, had already been preparing for a potential postponement, per the report, and once winds arrived on Sunday in South Korea, it got "well past the point at which the gondola that moves the skiers to the top of the mountain" could function.

Canada's Manuel Osborne-Paradis said dealing with the weather went part and parcel with competing in an outdoor sport.

The first available reserve day in the Alpine program is Friday.
