United Kingdom unveils online tool to block ISIS content

The British government is unveiling new technology to remove extremist material from social media.

Many companies with huge online platforms, such as Google and Facebook, already claimed to have developed technology to root out extremist content.

The Home Office in the United Kingdom has collaborated with ASI Data Science to create a tool which can auto-detect terrorist propaganda content online. Humans then have to assess the content and make a decision on removing it. "But I remain convinced that the best way to take real action, to have the best outcomes, is to have an industry-led forum like the one we've got". "This has to be in conjunction, though, of larger companies working with smaller companies".

The goal of these videos is to incite violence in our communities, recruit people to their cause, and attempt to spread fear in our society.

In a prepared statement, Rudd said: "We know that automatic technology like this can heavily disrupt the terrorists' actions, as well as prevent people from ever being exploited to these horrific images".

There in northern California the politician will meet with various tech industry representatives, and USA government politicians, to discuss tackling terrorist content online.

Black Caps topple England
New Zealand's Williamson, meanwhile, was delighted with his team's display, saying: 'It's a very important win for us. Australia face New Zealand on Friday, before England play the Black Caps for a second time two days later.

While the social network says that it has made progress in the detection and removal of such content, the unveiling of a new government-backed system would seem to indicate that the United Kingdom government is unhappy with the speed at which things have progressed, or that it prefers the idea of being in control of the detection tool itself.

Dr Marc Warner from ASI Data Science spoke to BuzzFeed News about the project, saying it is an AI algorithm, which works by "spotting subtle patterns in the extremist videos that distinguish them from normal content, from the rest of the internet". It works by being integrated into the upload process of any platform, and has been created to help smaller tech firms keep terrorist content off of their platforms.

The technology is expected to help smaller companies with identifying and removing content that promotes terrorism, something that the government has been critical of.

Rudd is on a two-day visit to San francisco meeting with tech giants and USA officials to discuss how to better combat extremists on Internet platforms.

"They can encourage the companies they invest in to introduce a facility to enable users and authorities to flag terrorist material for removal", Ms Rudd added.

The Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism, launched past year, brings together several governments including the USA and United Kingdom, and major internet firms like Facebook, Google, Twitter and others.
