Uber settles lawsuit with Waymo

Kalanick spoke Wednesday during testimony in a trial pitting Uber's ride-hailing service against Google's self-driving auto spinoff, Waymo.

In the lawsuit, Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving auto unit, said former Waymo engineer Levandowski downloaded more than 14,000 confidential documents in December 2015 before Kalanick hired him at Uber in 2016.

A settlement avoids years of costly appeals for Uber, or if the case had swung in the ride-hail company's favor, a retrial by Waymo.

For months, the ongoing legal fight between Uber, the scandal-ridden, hyper-valued ride-hailing start-up, and Waymo, Google's self-driving tech project, hung over the Bay Area like an indelible fog. But the trial is now over.

A spokesman for Waymo said the company "reached an agreement with Uber that we believe will protect Waymo's intellectual property now and into the future". So Uber started talking to Otto founder Anthony Levandowski, who was still working at Google, about helping Uber develop its laser sensor technology - an essential component for self-driving cars.

The lawsuit cost Uber precious time in its self-driving auto ambitions, a key to its long-term profitability. "The evidence at trial overwhelmingly proved that, and had the trial proceeded to its conclusion, it is clear Uber would have prevailed", the statement said.

It's unlikely that either company will confirm the settlement figure. Uber and Google were once partners, although their interests later began to collide, souring the business relationship.

The Alphabet-owned autonomous vehicle company Waymo has settled its civil suit with Uber over allegations of stolen trade secrets pertaining to autonomous driving technology.

Amazon to launch its own delivery service
The institutional investor owned 797 shares of the shipping service provider's stock after selling 546 shares during the period. Financial Engines Advisors L.L.C. purchased a new stake in shares of FedEx in the 3rd quarter valued at about $132,000.

In the case, Uber was accused of stealing Waymo trade secrets relating to driverless vehicle hardware, via its acquisition of Otto, a driverless truck startup founded by former Waymo engineer Andrew Levandowski. In addition to an agreement to not incorporate Waymo's confidential information into their hardware and software, Uber has agreed to pay Waymo a financial settlement which includes Uber equity and no cash, according to a source familiar with the settlement.

As part of the Otto acquisition, Uber indemnified Levandowski and his team against any future lawsuits filed by Waymo over trade-secret theft.

New cars come equipped with safety systems.

"The central issues in this case remains whether or not Uber misappropriated Uber's trade secrets, not whether Uber is an evil corporation", he said in one pretrial hearing. If that's not the case, then it would have to rebuild its LiDAR or retrofit its cars with LiDAR purchased on the open market, a potentially costly and time consuming move.

In a later text, Levandowski told Kalanick, "we do need to think through the strategy to take all the shortcuts we can find".

Had the case continued, the losing party likely would have appealed, which could have dragged out for years and may have involved a new trial. Judge Alsup had instructed Waymo to bring a separate lawsuit against Uber if it wished to block the company from using its software.

The Shakespearean term has aggressive overtones. "I thank both sides", he said.

Khosrowshahi has tried to distance the company from the culture of his predecessor.
