Uber Just Launched a New Option With Its Cheapest Fares Yet

"We don't think that this is at all like a bus", said Ethan Stock, Uber's director of product for shared rides, noting that Express Pool's routes aren't set in stone the way bus routes are.

Using its routing software, Uber is thinking of incorporating the ability to move to a better spot as an option in its regular service. It is reportedly rolling out in the USA, in cities like Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Miami, Denver, Los Angeles, and San Diego.

Uber initially launched as a high-end black vehicle service in San Francisco in 2009, but over the years it's adapted to the on-demand world.

Altruism aside, Uber is also trying to drastically cut back on the massive subsidies it pays to attract users to UberPool.

If you're willing to make a few concessions, your next Uber ride is going to be cheaper than ever. Instead of the driver meeting riders wherever they are, the app directs users to a designated pickup spot nearby.

In addition to having to walk a little prior to the journey, riders will also have to walk a bit at the end of their journey to reach their final destination.

"We are thinking about ways to help riders understand where their location is and whether there's any time trade-off in terms of getting picked up there", Durkosh said.

"If you're pulling out your phone and choosing Express Pool time after time, we want you to feel like there's going to be a consistent experience every time and the confidence that you're going to have a really straight, really smooth trip", Stock said.

The idea of Express is to eliminate the often maze-like path traditional Uber POOLs can take as drivers make their way to new passengers, Uber says. It meant that rides could be more affordable than uberX for passengers, and over time, cities could be less congested and polluted.

The new feature does not yet support pick-ups in Orange County or at airports, but will in the future, an Uber spokesperson said.
