Scrutiny of nominations in Nagaland and Meghalaya; Polls on 27 Feb

These include the NPF, NDPP, BJP, INC, JD (U), NPP, NCP, LJP and the AAP.

In Meghalaya, which is also going to polls on February 27, 110 candidates filed nomination papers for the 60 seats on the last day of filing papers on Wednesday.

After the mainstream political parties chose to defy the boycott diktat and contest the election, NSCN-IM had made a veiled threat, stating that any national worker found "defying the decision of the Naga people would face serious consequences as per the Ajha (decree) of the government".

There are 17 independent candidates in the fray.

Three Congress candidates failed to file papers-Shami Angh, former MLA from Longleng; Hovito Kiba from Zunheboto; and Choakpba Konyak from Tobu.

With just 20 days left for the elections, the last day of filing of nomination papers witnessed the highest number of nominations.

CEO Abhijit Sinha also said that the NPF has filed a formal complaint against Rio for allegedly blocking the way of its candidate Chupfu-o while on way to file nomination papers.

Former Chief Ministers Salseng C. Marak and Donkupar Roy filed their nomination papers as nominee of the Congress and United Democratic Party.

Highlighting the NPF's election manifesto, he said: "Reforms in governance would be the party government's priority so that good and efficient governance can be provided to the people".

The Congress in Nagaland said it was open to partnering with the Naga People's Front if it severed ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party, signalling the possibility of a fresh realignment of political groupings after an aborted campaign last month by key parties to boycott the elections.

The CCNTHCO had sought the support of political parties to its call for a solution to the protracted Naga political issue first.
