Pence Avoids 'Interaction' with North Korean Officials at Olympics

As Pence sat with South Korean President Moon Jae-In amid a heavy blanket of security that delayed many fans from getting to the venue for the start, the show was stolen by the colorful group of North Korean cheerleaders dispatched south of the border by leader Kim Jong Un. North Korean state media said Thursday there was no intention on the North Korean side for such talks to take place.

North Korea's delegation to the games will conclude its visit later on Sunday, having appeared to thaw the rift with the South, but there is scepticism about how honest Pyongyang is about improving relations.

"Chairman Kim Jong Un's envoy Kim Yo-jong delivered a letter expressing a willingness to improve relations", a spokesman for the president said during a press conference.

A spokesperson said: "The vice president is grateful that President Moon reaffirmed his strong commitment to the global maximum pressure campaign and for his support for continued sanctions".

The South Korean president requested both that North Korea re-open dialogue with the United States, and that the Koreas hold talks.

"And Dennis Rodman has confirmed this and he's met both of them personally", he added, referring to the former National Basketball Association player who has met with Kim multiple times.

US Vice President Mike Pence has urged South Korean President Moon Jae-in to be wary of North Korea's "charm offensive". The game came just 24 hours after an extraordinary opening ceremony filled with signs of unity between the two rivals.

In Washington, China's top diplomat Yang Jiechi, who was visiting the U.S., told Mr Trump that China hoped it and the United States could increase their coordination on the North Korea issue, China's Foreign Ministry said yesterday.

On Friday, Pence said the US will be working to come up with a peaceful solution, but added that it will oppose talks between South and North Korea that don't involve the North dismantling its nuclear program.

During their meeting, she invited him to visit North Korea.

During their meeting President Moon was pictured smiling and shaking hands with Kim Yo Jong.

According to CNN, though Moon and Pence did not discuss the invitation during an afternoon meeting, a USA official "added that Pence does not believe that the invitation dilutes the toughness of the United States pressure campaign on North Korea".

Towards the end of the ceremony, President Moon Jae-in declared the Pyeongchang Games open, kicking off just over two weeks of winter sporting action. However, the U.S. Treasury Department a year ago included Kim Yo Jong on its list of blacklisted officials over her position as vice director of the ruling Workers' Party's Propaganda and Agitation Department.
