Minnie Driver quits Oxfam role over charity sex scandal

The prostitution scandal engulfing worldwide aid charity Oxfam is a symptom of a "global problem" in the aid industry, a former senior United Nations aid worker says.

Another involved an assault on a teenage volunteer by a staff member in an Oxfam charity shop in Britain, she said.

However, she added that the "abhorrent mistakes of a troubling organization" would not stop her in her charity work.

Aid Minister Penny Mordaunt threatened on Sunday (11 February) to withdraw government funding from Oxfam unless it gave the full facts about events in Haiti.

International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt said Oxfam had failed to show "moral leadership" and had failed to properly inform donors, regulators and prosecutors about the actions of its workers. It is now clear that these allegations - involving the use of prostitutes and which related to behaviour of both the Country Director and members of his team in Chad - were raised before he moved to Haiti. "M&S continues to monitor the situation very closely as we seek to understand the steps that Oxfam is taking to address them and develop a robust safeguarding plan for the future".

But Andrew MacLeod, former chief of operations of the UN's Emergency Coordination Centre and Red Cross aid worker, said the Oxfam scandal is just the tip of the iceberg.

"The Oxfam Charity's CEO Mark Goldring (C-L) and Chair Caroline Thomson (C-R) leave the Department of International Trade and Development in London".

Pro golfer Bill Haas involved in deadly California crash
The Ferrari's driver was pronounced dead at the scene while Haas and a 50-year-old female were taken to hospital. Haas was set to play in the PGA Tour's Genesis Open, at the nearby Riviera Country Club, starting on Thursday.

He used a slot on BBC Radio 4's Thought for the Day on Tuesday to ask: 'Why have the revelations about staff using prostitutes done Oxfam quite so much damage?

Documents provided by Oxfam have led to further questions and suggest that the charity might not have "fully and frankly disclosed material details about the allegations at the time", the Charity Commission said.

Edinburgh-based Mercy Corps, one of the biggest aid agencies in the world, said it made a strategic priority a year ago to assess and strengthen its culture, policies and procedures relating to gender diversity and inclusion, which also encompasses how it addresses sexual misconduct.

"I am deeply sad to announce that I have resigned as Deputy Chief Executive of Oxfam Great Britain". "But people chose to abuse and exploit vulnerable adults and younger children and there was a failure to deal with that".

While acknowledging that most of those working in the worldwide development sector "do so in a diligent and appropriate manner", he added: "The Scottish Government will not hesitate to take appropriate action whenever we suspect that any abuse has occurred, and we expect the same commitment from those working with us".

Visa, for example, which developed a partnership with Oxfam to help distribute funds to people hit by natural disaster, said it is watching closely.
