Man dies after vehicles crash on airfield at airport

A man has died after two airport vehicles crashed at Heathrow Airport.

Police said a man in his 40s died in the incident.

The Emergency services rushed to the incident which is understood to be a crash between two vehicles on the apron. A second man was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Some flights at the airport have been delayed due to the incident, but passengers have been told to check in as normal.

Some passengers were forced to leave their planes as a result of the incident, with delays to a number of flights reported by people on the tarmac and at their gates.

"One male [no further information], is believed to have sustained a broken shoulder; his injuries are not life-threatening or life-changing".

They are often driven around the airfield at high speed by Heathrow staff carrying out tasks such as directing aircraft and inspecting the runways. One was treated for a shoulder injury and taken to hospital. The other man, in his 40s, went into cardiac arrest and died despite medics' attempts to resuscitate him.

"The Metropolitan Police force said its officers were called just after 6 a.m.to a crash on the taxiway, which Heathrow initially described as a "serious accident involving two vehicles" on the airfield".

"The Health and Safety executive has been informed". We await formal identification.

But a spokeswoman for British Airways said several of its flights from Terminal 5 were delayed by the crash.

She added: "Our deepest condolences go to the family and friends affected by this accident".

A spokesman for the airport added: "The airfield remains open and we will work to minimise disruption to our passengers' journeys".
