His West Wing rattled, Trump casts doubt on aide's exit

The president has stood by other men - including Roy Moore, the Alabama Republican who ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate - when they faced allegations of abuse or harassment, while rarely expressing sympathy for the women who accused them.

Porter denied the allegations against him when he resigned last week.

Since early last week, the accusations that Porter battered two ex-wives has rocked the White House, with media outlets revealing that he may have had access to the same classified information as the president and did not have security clearance.

Trump tweeted on Saturday that "peoples lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation".

"The president supports victims of domestic violence and believes everybody should be treated fairly and with due process", Sanders said. Hicks has become one of Trump's closest confidants, and while the president has groused about her involvement in the Porter flareup, he had not suggested ousting her, according to the two people familiar with his private discussions.

Corbett could not be reached for comment on Monday, but she told the Washington Post that she never filed a police report on any alleged abuse.

Both Holderness and Porter's other ex-wife, Jennifer Willoughby have accused the former White House staff secretary of physical and emotional abuse during their marriages.

Trump made no mention of the women or the abuse allegations when he spoke about Porter at the White House on Friday.

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway says she has "no reason not to believe" the women who accused White House aide Rob Porter of domestic abuse. Some aides in that meeting privately questioned Kelly's account, thinking his version of events was self-serving, according to one official with knowledge of the meeting but not authorized to discuss it publicly.

Porter said in a statement at about 1:42 p.m. Wednesday afternoon that he would resign but remain at the White House to "ensure a smooth transition". She also would not say why dozens of White House officials still do not have permanent security clearances 13 months into the administration.

Alluding to the photographic evidence of domestic abuse that resulted in the ouster of former White House aide Rob Porter from his job last week, Earhardt asked Gidley, "Will you and Sarah Huckabee Sanders, will y'all get together and maybe advise [Trump] and talk to him about, this is an opportunity when he can come out against domestic violence?" Sanders, in her briefing that day, said Porter himself made a decision to resign and that his departure "won't be immediate". She denied reports that Trump might be considering her as a replacement.

"Kelly will probably stay but with this White House, anything can happen", historian Chris Whipple, author of a book on chiefs of staff, told me.

"I think the president's shaped by a lot of false accusations against him in the past", said legislative director Marc Short, who added that Trump was "very disappointed" by the charges against Porter.

"We wish him well", Trump told reporters during a hastily arranged photo opportunity in the Oval Office.
