Facebook losing young users even faster to Snapchat, eMarketer says

A surge in older users means over-55s will become the second-biggest demographic of Facebook users this year.

Facebook, the leading social network with more than 2 billion users worldwide, is losing younger users in the U.S.at a faster pace than previously estimated, per researcher eMarketer.

eMarketer analysts expect Snapchat to lure in older users as well since its interface is easier to handle than Facebook's or Instagram's.

In the United Kingdom, 71% of social network users between 12 and 17 years old will be using Facebook regularly this year, a downgrade of eight points from last year's forecast, EMarketer said.

eMarketer predicts Instagram will add 1.6 million users ages 24 and younger.

In 2018, the number of US Facebook users ages 11 and younger will decline by 9.3 per cent.

The amount of users in that age demographic declined by 1.4 million (9.9 percent) previous year, according to data The Daily Caller News Foundation obtained from eMarketer.

It's the first time eMarketer has predicted a decline in the number of US Facebook users in those age-groups. EMarketer estimates that Instagram will add 1.6 million USA users to Snapchat's 1.9 million users in 2018.

Trump budget again targets regional water cleanup programs like Chesapeake Bay
There is a bi-partisan push back by Great Lakes leaders against Donald Trump's newly released budget and infrastructure proposals. Trump's budget targets water cleanup programs and he is trying to eliminate federal support of cleanups for iconic USA waterways.

"The question is whether the younger ones will continue to regard the snapchat cult when their parents and grandparents start using it", he added.

Facebook continues to add monthly users overall.

The nature of Snapchat's design, however, defaults away from everyone seeing what users post.

Last year, eMarketer predicted Facebook would see declines among some youths for the first time in its history.

While many are leaving for Instagram (which Facebook owns), more are heading to rival Snapchat. In addition to the stereotypical uncool mom and dad (and grandma and grandpa), kids usually don't want older family members seeing what they're talking about.

Facebook is still the most popular social media platform worldwide, and is set to serve 169.5 million US users in 2018. Users have been spending considerably less time on the platform, according to the most recent company earnings report, but profits still soared. However, more than half of American teens are expected to switch over to Snapchat this year itself.

Facebook seems to have lost its charm of being the old-school favourite in social media hub. It's also believed that Facebook-owned app Instagram will grow by 13 percent to 105 million users in 2018.

That's even better than Snapchat's expected growth - eMarketer believes it will grow its US audience by 9 percent in 2018.
