Climber airlifted off OR mountain dies

Several other climbers were stranded on Oregon's tallest peak after heavy snow created risky climbing conditions on Oregon's tallest mountain.

Emergency crews responded to separate incidents at the Hogsback area Tuesday to help 2 injured people, however, the male climber was pronounced dead once he arrived at the hospital, according to officials.

Mr Peck said others in his climbing group continued, and he was concerned that they were among those stranded. Other climbers were on the mountain Tuesday afternoon, but it's unknown if they are in trouble.

Four of the climbers were assisted to safety by rescue personnel and the remaining three made their way down without help, reports the sheriff's office. An additional three climbers were making their way down the mountain without assistance.

Like the other two climbers, a snowcat picked her up just above Palmer Glacier and brought her down to the lodge just before 8 p.m.

Jensen said the climbers have food and water to last a day but needed to get off the mountain because of the winter storm expected early Wednesday.

More than a half-dozen people had been climbing near Mount Hood's peak when a climber fell about 1,000 feet, (304 meters) said Sgt. Brian Jensen, a Clackamas County sheriff's office spokesman.

Witnesses called for help immediately, and other climbers got to the man - believed to be in his 30s - and began to render aid.

A blood alcohol test taken three hours later showed that Romero still had a BAC of 0.19 which is more than twice the legal limit. The death of the 3-year-old boy is the second recent fatal incident involving a drunk driving illegal immigrant in the past week.

The other climbers began signaling for help and performed CPR on the victim for nearly two hours.

Other climbers are on the mountain, but it's unknown if they are stuck.

Russell Gubele of Mountain Wave Search and Rescue said Tuesday that he is unable to release information about the climber's condition.

"I saw like I said a lot of people were struggling traversing", he said.

At least one has died after falling several hundred feet on the cliff.

The climbers were on the Hogsback area near the summit of the 11,240-foot (3.4 kilometers) mountain about 60 miles (97 kilometers) east of Portland.

A climber fell while attempting to summit Mount Hood, the tallest peak in Oregon.

"There is falling rocks and ice, which is normal when you have freezing at night and it gets so warm during the day that it creates a very hazardous and treacherous situation on the mountain". The group is stranded at a safe location, but they can not descend because the area is hazardous.
