Bangladesh going slow on Rohingya repatriation to ensure their safety

Johnson is in Thailand after visiting Bangladesh, where he met Rohingya refugees, and Myanmar, where he held talks on the Rohingya situation with the country's leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

The U.N. has described the campaign against the Rohingya as textbook example of ethnic cleansing, saying it possibly amounts to genocide in a court of law.

Almost 690,000 Rohingya have fled Rakhine and crossed into southern Bangladesh since August, when attacks on security posts by rebels triggered a military crackdown that the United Nations has said may amount to genocide.

Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres) estimates 6,700 Rohingya died in the first month of violence.

Speaking after his meeting with Suu Kyi, he said: 'The UK is already a major donor to the humanitarian crisis.

On Friday, Myanmar's Catholic cardinal said it's likely that Rohingya Muslim refugees in Bangladesh won't ever go home, and that "the elements of ethnic cleansing" that drove them out are now apparent.

Myanmar's government has arrested 16 people, including members of its own security forces, in connection with the killings of 10 captured Rohingya Muslims.

Two of the journalists working on the report, Wa Lone, 31, and Kyaw Soe Oo (pictured top), 27, were arrested in December on charges of violating Myanmar's official secrets act.

Suu Kyi - a Nobel Peace Prize laureate - has faced a barrage of worldwide criticism for failing to halt the violence against the Rohingya.

The panel was thrown into the spotlight last month after veteran United States diplomat Bill Richardson published a withering resignation letter, saying he could not in "good conscience" sit on a board he feared would only "whitewash" the causes of the Rohingya crisis.
