Apple's iOS Code Has Been Leaked and Uploaded to GitHub

Apple responded by filing a copyright takedown request with GitHub shortly after the breach, all but confirming that the leaked code was genuine. The iPhone maker has confirmed that code for iOS 9's iBoot had leaked, but stressed its age.

The code leaked onto GitHub claims to be designed for iOS 9 but much of it is likely to be found in iOS 11, making the leak potentially risky to Apple's mobile software.

"There are many layers of hardware and software protections built in to our products, and we always encourage customers to update to the newest software releases to benefit from the latest protections", Apple said in its statement. This has made the software development platform to remove the controversial iOS source code though enough damage could have already been done. It's responsible for verifying the kernel is genuine and then commencing its execution.

The iBoot source code could also enable programmers to eventually find a way to emulate iOS on devices other than iPhones and iPads, which would be a big thorn in Apple's closed ecosystem approach.

In the end, while the leak of the iBoot source code obviously isn't a good look for Apple, according to Wardle it doesn't presage a security apocalypse for the average iPhone owner.

Maduro names date for Venezuela election but may run without opposition
The date was one of the key items under discussion at talks between the two sides held in the Dominican Republic. Maduro, meanwhile, says opposition leaders are feckless right-wing elites who get their orders from Washington.

The anonymous sources say that they were part of a group of five individuals who were given the leaked iBoot code.

To assuage fears, however, Apple is claiming this leak does not warrant security worry for iPhone users. "The code is for an older version of iBoot, but still could be used to help people jailbreak the system and find new ways to bypass controls or allow an attacker to develop an exploit against a vulnerability".

Motherboard asked Jonathan Levin - chief technology officer of software security firm Technologeeks and author of several books on the theme - what he thinks about the leak. While Apple has said that the leak is essentially nothing for users to be concerned about, it makes one wonder whether Apple's ecosystem is as roughly locked down as once thought. There are no details on how ZioShiba got the iBoot source code, but after seeing it, we're certain it's the real deal.

While the leak just gained mainstream attention this week, the code has been floating around for a while.
