Apple's HomePod may leave marks on wood furniture

Apple's new HomePod smart speaker is leaving a unusual white stain on wooden surfaces, according to some users.

Pic: POCKET-LINTApple's new smart speakers can discolour wooden surfaces, leaving a white mark where they are placed, the firm has acknowledged. The marks should be able to be cleaned off and will fade gradually anyway, the brand says. After you update to the latest iOS software, placing an iPhone or other iOS device near the HomePod causes a window to pop up with a picture of a HomePod and a Set Up button. And now there's one more irritation to add to that list, as it seems the HomePod can damage your wood furniture.

There's no word on whether or not Apple will be taking steps to fix this problem, replace units, or even what is causing the reaction to occur.

Analysts at TechInsight have calculated that it costs Apple $216 to build a HomePod, and estimated the company makes a ~38% profit. Both publications noticed that HomePod doesn't leave rings on every type of wooden surface.

The Wirecutter called it the "best current speaker for Apple Music", compared to competitors like Sonos One and the Google Home Max, and Wired says it "sounds wonderful".

Energy demands soar in Iceland in race for bitcoins
Iceland's National Energy Authority stated that this was more than households use on the island nation of 340,000. Mining of cryptocurrencies is booming in the land of fire and ice, due to low-priced energy.

Early adopters of Apple's speaker-designed to compete with Amazon's line of Alexa-powered speakers and Google's family of Home speakers. If they remain, Apple suggested customers "try cleaning the surface with the manufacturer's suggested oiling method", Wirecutter reported. Apple says that these rings are a result of the oils diffused between the speaker's vibration-dampening silicone base and the wood.

The Wirecutter said "glass, granite countertop, nice MDF, polyurethane-sealed wood, and cheap IKEA bookcases", were all immune to the damage during its tests.

So $349 for a spying device that also ruins your furniture.

According to Apple, the white, circular marks left behind by the HomePod on wooden surfaces may improve after several days.

If moving the speaker doesn't work, Apple advises wiping the surface gently with a soft damp or dry cloth may remove the marks.
