Walmart can help you safely dispose of opioid medications

ABC News reports that Walmart pharmacies in the USA will provide DisposeRX packets free with opioid prescriptions. It can be used on medication in any form, including pills, powders, capsules, liquids, tablets and patches.

Walmart already distributes safety brochures with prescriptions and offers counseling on safe opioid use.

The retail giant announced Wednesday that it will provide the packets free with opioid prescriptions filled at its 4,700 USA pharmacies.

Walmart's announcement marks the first time one of the nation's largest pharmacies has offered a free way to dispose of opioids at all locations.

Retail giant Walmart is offering a way for people to get rid of any leftover opioids they might have by giving away packets that turn the painkillers into a useless gel.

The tiny sachets are made by DisposeRX, and contain a powder that is poured into prescription bottles containing the pills. "I commend Walmart for taking this innovative approach to help keep unused prescription drugs out of the wrong hands".

More than 50% of people who abuse prescription opioids obtain them through friends and family, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That level of death led President Donald Trump in October to declare the opioid epidemic a public health emergency.

In the statement that revealed this latest addition to the company's pharmaceutical operations, Walmart notes how "DisposeRx provides a virtually effortless way for patients to destroy leftover opioids and a way to do so without ever leaving home". However, the retailer does not accept the return for disposal of the drugs that it sells.

Walmart's Hays said DisposeRX "provides a [disposal] solution for customers to manage that at home, and much more conveniently". John Boozman, R-Ark., where the company's headquarters is located. "Too often, these risky narcotics remain unsecured where children, teens or visitors may have access", which really drives home the necessity for this newly-established program.
