Walmart boosts pay, closing some Sam's Clubs

Walmart, the largest USA private employer, with more than 1 million workers, said Thursday it plans to raise starting wages from $9 to $11 an hour and hand out employee bonuses ranging from $200 to $1,000, becoming the latest company to give a least some of the credit for new worker benefits to the recently passed tax plan.

Prominent Republicans like Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan quickly applauded Walmart, while also patting themselves on the back for passing the new tax law.

But while the praise was pouring in, something else was happening. "ORCRP016487-topic.html" class="local_link" >Wal-Mart Stores Inc. The amount, between $200 and $1,000, depends on how long they worked at the company. Some of the details were filled in by notices posted on state government websites in accordance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.

A Walmart official said the company is closing 63 Sam's Club stores across the country.

Walmart declined to comment when asked by InsideSources. He said some employees have been with the wholesale company for two decades. "We'll convert some of them into e-commerce fulfillment centers - to better serve the growing number of members shopping with us online and continue scaling the SamsClub.com business".

The company said the local closure is part of an effort to downsize the brand. In some cases employees showed up to work having not been told of the closures, a company spokesperson said, CNBC reports.

"They raised the minimum wage because they have to", Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, said. "They just made a rapid miscalculation". "We know what our customers need".

AFC Wildcard Buffalo Bills at Jacksonville Jaguars: Preview and Prediction
Jacksonville's latest defensive gem - a 10-3 victory against Buffalo (9-8) on Sunday - set up a rematch with the Steelers (13-3). Jacksonville players standing on the sideline pointed to Clay's feet, and coach Doug Marrone threw the challenge flag.

"I used to come in once a week sometimes, or every other week", Den said.

"We want to thank them", Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said of Walmart's decision.

Furner's email also noted that "we will work to place as many associates as possible in new roles at nearby locations, and we'll provide them with support, resources and severance pay to those eligible". "Walmart has been viewed as a bad citizen who is getting better".

And hey, as both a worker and a shareholder, that makes me happy.

Ronn Torossian, CEO of the public relations agency 5WPR, disagreed. But he agreed that Walmart should have led with the store closures, and discussed the raises and bonuses later.

A full list of impacted stores has not been released, and it's unclear if more stores could shut down.

But raising wages is something you could argue Walmart needed to do even in a less-favorable tax environment.
