Vic Fangio expected to return as Bears defensive coordinator

Indications were that the Bears stepped up to make Fangio one of the highest-paid coordinators in the NFL.

Fangio, 59, will sign a three-year contract, according to ESPN.

The Bears are looking to become more offensive-minded under Nagy, who served as the offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs prior to becoming the Bears' new head coach. Fangio ultimately spurned every potential job, opting to stay with Chicago.

It's safe to assume that several of Fangio's defensive assistants will also return, but the Bears now have their main assistants locked in with Fangio, offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich and Special Teams Coordinator Chris Tabor. The Bears also brought in Charles London to coach running backs and Mike Furrey as their wide receivers coach. And Helfrich's head-coaching experience should assist Nagy, a first-time National Football League head coach and full-time play-caller who'll be able to lean on Helfrich's background as he acclimates to a new position. The supporting cast of Nagy's coaching scheme was asked about during his press conference, and he responded that they were simply going to work and evaluate. The Bears certainly want Fangio to return after the improvements that have been made, especially in 2017 when the team ranked 10th in total defense despite weathering significant injuries. His coaching staff seems likely to take shape fairly quickly, and on Thursday morning ESPN's Adam Schefter reported former OR head coach Mike Helfrich is coming aboard as offensive coordinator. The status of assistant offensive line coach Ben Wilkerson is unknown.

Whether or not that's a coincidence, the "Vic Fangio Effect" is something the Bears valued, and retaining him is considered a big step in the right direction.

Fangio arrived in Chicago from San Francisco, where he spent four seasons as the 49ers defensive coordinator.
