Turkey issues travel warning for the US citing 'arbitrary detentions' risks

The travel warning came days after the United States urged its citizens to reconsider travel to Turkey, citing terror threats and arbitrary detentions under an ongoing state of emergency.

The Foreign Ministry on Friday issued a travel warning for Turkish citizens planning to travel to the USA, citing an increase in violence and terror attacks.

Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu had warned Washington of possible deterioration of relations with Turkey and had stressed that contacts/ties were damaged by Washington's refusal to extradite Fethulah Gulen to Ankara; Ankara considers him the leader of the attempted coup against Recep Tayyip Erdogan, but also of the supply of weapons to the Kurdish militia in northern Syria (YPG), that Ankara considers to be a terrorist organisation.

It has only been a few weeks since the two countries lifted visa restrictions against each other.

Speaking to reporters after Friday prayers, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said the reciprocal travel warnings did not help the strained ties between Ankara and Washington.

"The "Turkey is not a safe country" statement does not benefit ties between the two countries", Yildirim said.

A series of ongoing diplomatic skirmishes have strained relations between the U.S. and Turkey, NATO's largest Muslim country and a key U.S. ally in the Middle East.

Ties between Washington and Ankara, the biggest Muslim country in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and a major USA ally in the Middle East, have been strained by a number of disputes in recent months, including the US arrest and conviction of a Turkish banker in an Iran sanctions-busting case.

The banker's trial heard testimony about corruption from senior Turkish officials.

Turkey blames Gulen for orchestrating a failed coup in Turkey in July 2016, a charge Gulen denies.

Meanwhile several bodyguards of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have been indicted in absentia over a fracas during his visit to the U.S. a year ago.

Turkey is also upset that the United States has supported a Kurdish militia, which Ankara considers to be a terrorist organization, inside Syria.

"An ally publishing a travel warning about us is not a serious thing, but we will discuss it with Tillerson in Vancouver", Cavusoglu said during a televised speech at the Turkish consulate in Los Angeles.

Turkey on Friday reinstated more than 1,800 civil servants purged after a 2016 failed coup, determining they had no links to the network of a cleric accused of masterminding the putsch, state-run Anadolu news agency said.
