SpaceX, Pentagon wash hands of mysterious Zuma mission

Ground crews took steps this week to prepare for next Falcon 9 launch, set for no earlier than January 30 with a telecom satellite for SES and the Luxembourg government, as SpaceX officials stressed their rocket was not to blame for the rumored loss of a mysterious USA government payload after liftoff Sunday. "Due to the classified nature of the payload, no further comment is possible", said SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell.

SpaceX has launched national security payloads in the past, including a spy satellite for the National Reconnaissance Office, and an X-37B space plane for the US Air Force.

Shotwell said the company's defense of the Falcon 9 was based on "review of all data to date", and it would report any new information changing that assessment.

During a Pentagon briefing, spokeswoman Dana White was asked whether the US Department of Defense considered the Zuma mission a success or a failure.

On Monday, lawmakers were informed that the mission was "a total loss" and the payload plummeted back into the atmosphere when it failed to detach from the rocket, sources told the Wall Street Journal. The last Corporation in the launch previously collaborated with the Alliance ULA (United Launch Alliance), a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin, not SpaceX. However, SpaceX censored critical portions of the launch, including the separation of the nose cone surrounding the top-secret Zuma satellite, and the satellite's actual deployment into earth's orbit.

Results from the firing will be analyzed ahead of Falcon Heavy's demonstration flight around the "end of the month", according to CEO Elon Musk.

Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL), who previous flew into space in the 1980s aboard Columbia as a payload specialist, sided with SpaceX, stating, "The first statement by SpaceX was that the failure to achieve orbit was not theirs".

Of those scenarios, he said, the third appears to be the most plausible. The satellite could have stopped working on orbit - or, if it failed to separate from the second stage because of a problem, it could have tumbled back toward Earth, she said. If the satellite was still attached, it would not have been salvageable.

SpaceX has pushed back its scheduled test fire of the Falcon Heavy rocket by one day.

"If we or others find otherwise based on further review, we will report it immediately", she said.

That includes the debut launch of its Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center.

The rocket is the largest in the world right now, made up of three boosters and 27 engines.

The satellite launch was originally scheduled for November 15, but SpaceX pushed it back to review how the Falcon 9 delivers its payload.

According to the latest ArsTechnica, now in the U.S. Congress to investigate the circumstances of the possible loss of Zuma and the role of interaction between SpaceX and Northrop Grumman.
