Rohingyas want to see security, rights ensured before return Myanmar

Myanmar's military admitted this week that soldiers and villagers were responsible for the deaths of 10 Rohingya Muslims found in a grave last month in Inn Dinn village of Maungdaw Township.

More than 600,000 Rohingya, who are not recognised by the Myanmar government as one of the country's many ethnic groups, have fled to Bangladesh since August past year, when violence between armed Rohingya and Myanmar security forces prompted a severe crackdown.

The Rohingyas found in the mass grave had threatened Buddhist villagers and were killed in retaliation, the Independent reported, citing a statement on the military commander-in-chief's Facebook page, as saying.

About 650,000 Rohingya have fled the western state of Rakhine and elsewhere to neighboring Bangladesh, the United Nations estimates, after an attack on police by extremist Rohingya militants in August set off a violent backlash.

The request comes after Myanmar military admitted that some of its soldiers were involved in the murder of 10 captured Rohingya men in western Rakhine state in September a year ago and buried them in a mass grave near Inn Din village in Maungdaw township.

It labeled the 400 dead as "extreme terrorists" who died during military "clearance operations".

There were no signs of major protests during the day on Sunday, though officials appeared to be bracing for unrest after dark. The death toll stood at 12 on January 1, and before that the Iranian Regime had only confirmed four deaths.

"This grisly admission is a sharp departure from the army's policy of blanket denial of any wrongdoing", said James Gomez, Amnesty International's regional director for Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

According to an agreement signed by Myanmar and Bangladesh in November 2017, Myanmar is scheduled to begin repatriations of refugees by January 22.

In November, Kono visited a refugee camp in Cox's Bazar, southeastern Bangladesh, where Rohingya had fled.

In a meeting with Suu Kyi in Myanmar, Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono said Japan planned to give further aid of $20 million to improve humanitarian conditions and development in Rakhine state.

Japan on Friday said it would grant Myanmar $3 million to assist in the repatriation of Rohingya Muslims.
