Qatar denies intercepting UAE civilian jets

Earlier, Qatar had denied that it had intercepted a UAE passenger plane headed to neighbouring Bahrain, shortly after the United Arab Emirates accused Qatari fighter jets of intercepting a flight.

The act "is a flagrant threat to the safety of civil aviation and a clear violation of worldwide law", the agency said, citing a statement from the UAE Civil Aviation Authority.

"This is a routine flight that has all the required paperwork", the authority said.

GCCA stressed that "the UAE rejects this threat to the safety of air traffic and will take all necessary legal measures to ensure the safety and security of civil aviation".

WAM said a second flight to Bahrain was similarly "intercepted".

The UAE Civil Aviation Authority said the two Emirati airliners encountered the jets from Qatar, which lies between the UAE and Bahrain, while en route to Bahrain.

The U.S. Air Force Central Command, which is based at Qatar's al-Udeid Air Base, didn't immediately have any report about any incident, the Associated Press quoted Air Force spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Damien Pickart as saying.

Qatari authorities have strongly denied the claim saying it was false.

The Qatari government has denied the accusation, blasting the blockade as unjustified and a violation of worldwide law.Amid the riff, Turkey has provided increased support to Qatar, boosting food and other imports to meet the country's shortages.

Qatar has long denied funding extremists and recently restored full diplomatic relations with Iran, with whom it shares a massive offshore natural gas field.

Notably, the UAE is a member of a Saudi-led bloc of Arab states that collectively severed ties with Qatar previous year for allegedly supporting terrorist groups in the region.

The claim, published by UAE state-run news agency WAM, follows two complaints by Qatar to the United Nations about Emirati military aircraft allegedly violating its worldwide airspace.

"We will take necessary measures with global bodies for Qatar to face the consequences of these violations", the Bahraini government said.

They also follow Qatar filing two complaints at the United Nations over alleged violations of its airspace by Emirati military aircraft.

The Qatari royal rose to prominence after he reportedly appeared on several Saudi and UAE television shows expressing support for a blockade on Qatar imposed by four Gulf countries, according to Al Jazeera.

Minister Al Thani said the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, sent envoys to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to demand the woman's extradition but the Emir refused the request.
