Protests Set For Friday At Tim's Locations

31, 2016, the number of Tim Hortons locations in Canada was 3,801.

Organizers behind the protest campaign, dubbed Fight for $15 and Fairness, say the demonstrations planned at specific Tim Hortons franchises on Friday were not about the franchise owners themselves, but rather to pressure the parent company.

Other cities involved in the protest include Calgary, Halifax, Saskatoon, Regina, Vancouver and two other cities in British Columbia.

Bayon said RBI has the power to control the franchise's decision and "support Tim Hortons workers, bring back the benefits that they were getting and more".

"What they should be doing is making sure that this minimum wage increase lifts the workers up but instead what they're doing is using this as an excuse to claw things back", said Jessica Sikora, an executive board member at OPSEU.

After the cuts facing Tim Hortons workers were revealed, Leadnow launched a petition calling for workers' protections, which has nearly 20,000 signatures so far.

A Tim Hortons franchise in Kingston was one of 50 locations across Ontario at which a "day of action" rally was held on Friday afternoon to bring attention to labour practices by some Tim Hortons franchisees in the wake of Ontario's minimum wage hike.

Protesters also got signatures for their petition, asking the Nova Scotia government to increase the minimum wage.

Flynn said he would still welcome further discussions with small business owners about the policy but said Wynne was right to criticize the franchisees for such actions.

Tim Hortons has said individual franchisees are responsible for setting employee wages and benefits, while complying with applicable laws.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne announced the passing of the "Fair Workplaces Act' (Bill 148)".

Protesters angered by some Ontario Tim Hortons franchisees who slashed workers' benefits and breaks after the province raised its minimum wage plan to spread their rallies to other areas of the country.

He said the local labour council is not aware of any cutbacks a local Tim Hortons locations, noting the goal is to press Restaurant Brands International to ensure that employees throughout the chain are treated fairly and that the intent of the minimum wage hike - to improve the lives of workers - is honoured.
