Rescuers are desperately searching for survivors after tropical storm Tembin hit the southern areas of the Philippines on Friday, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Just last week, the central Philippines was hit by tropical storm Urduja which claimed at least 40 lives and destroyed an estimated PHP1 billion ($19.95 million) in infrastructure and agriculture.

The Philippines is battered by about 20 typhoons a year and warnings are routinely issued. Tembin is the 22nd to enter the country this year.

Health worker Arturo Simbajon said almost the entire coastal village of Anungan on the Zamboanga peninsula of Mindanao island had been wiped out by a barrage of broken logs, boulders and mud that swept down a river and out to sea.
