People familiar with deal: Mets, Bruce agree at $39M, 3 yrs

Bruce hit.248 with seven home runs and 26 RBIs for the Indians, giving him season totals of 36 home runs and 101 RBIs.

The Mets (70-92) will hope Bruce's power can help them improve upon their fourth-place NL East finish past year, and get them back into postseason contention.

The move is not without risk.

When Conforto returns, Bruce could shift to first base from right field, or he could be part of an outfield rotation with Yoenis Cespedes in left, Conforto in center, and Brandon Nimmo and Juan Lagares rotating around. And never has he posted a particularly high batting average or on-base percentage, hitting.249 and getting on at a.319 clip for his career. Bruce will likely fill the role he did a year ago, playing a corner outfield spot but also occasionally playing first base.

Major League Baseball free agency had hit a stand still since the winter meetings, with few signings or trades taking place.

The lack of movement on the free agent market this winter and particularly with top slugging outfielder J.D. Martinez still out there seemingly holding up other players, however, seems to have created a buyers market in January. Bruce previously played with the Cincinnati Reds from 2008-2016, the Mets from 2016-2017, and the Indians to close out the 2017 season. He slumped badly down the stretch that year until finally going on a tear during the final week of the season to help NY secure a wild card for its second consecutive playoff appearance. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports it is a three-year, $39 million deal.

The following offseason, many questioned whether the Texas native who had previously spent his entire professional career with the Reds could handle the NY spotlight.

Bruce has played with just three teams during his 10-year career.

After being sent to Cleveland, however, Bruce said he enjoyed his time in NY and was open to coming back.

Jeurys Familia will hopefully stay healthy this year, and having guys like AJ Ramos, Jerry Blevins and the aforementioned Swarzak waiting in the wings makes the pen solid.

The Indians expected Bruce to sign elsewhere.

Terms of the agreement were first reported by ESPN.
