National Weather Service warns of freezing rain, sleet, snow

Most of the areas that experience a wintry mix will also see that eventually change over to snow before the storm exits.

The storm will gather in strength as it moves toward the Northeast, with meteorologists reporting a second low pressure area spreading the snow, sleet, and icy rain to parts further east from.

A significant concern is the sleet and freezing rain that will fall across the Midwest as the cold air rushes in and meets up with the moisture from the storm.

Midland Texas was being hammered by wind gusts of 68 miles per hour, which was causing heavy dust storms, while warnings of snow, ice, flooding and strong winds have been issued in several other states.

Across Tennessee, residents from Memphis to Nashville can expect light accumulations of ice followed by another 2 to 3 inches of snow.

Winter storm Hunter also brought snow to Kansas and blizzard conditions to North Dakota.

Behind this weather system colder air has moved in and will be in place through the weekend.

Today's advisory calls for a tenth of an inch of ice and 3 to 5 inches of snow after that. Nashville and Louisville saw freezing rain, while more than an inch of sleet accumulated in northern MS, western Kentucky, parts of Arkansas and parts of Louisiana.

Puma said residents should be weather aware and should pay attention to trusted outlets to deliver updates, as the forecast is bound to change as the storm gets closer.

All area schools are either closed, or are already considering plans to release staff and students early as the cold weather arrives.

Saturday: Snow showers likely, mainly through the early morning. The high temperature is expected to reach 59 degrees.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy skies and single digit low temperatures return, with a low of 9 degrees.
