National Football League probing possible 'Rooney rule' breach in Raiders deal

The rumor circulating for weeks that Jon Gruden may be hired as a coach somewhere in the National Football League has been confirmed, with the announcement that he was officially hired as the coach of the Oakland Raiders at the end of the first wild card game featuring the Titans and the Chiefs.

Davis said at the press conference he met with Gruden on Christmas Eve in Philadelphia - prior to the Raiders-Eagles game on Christmas night - and was "pretty confident that [Gruden] was all-in".

Raiders coach Jack Del Rio was sacked a week later and Gruden was appointed on January 6, appearing to make it unlikely that any other candidate was interviewed.

"We are deeply concerned by reports that the Oakland Raiders' owner, Mark Davis, came to an agreement with Jon Gruden about him becoming the Raiders' next head coach before interviewing any candidates of color".

Now, a group that handles diversity issues for the league is asking the NFL to investigate the Raiders for a potential Rooney Rule violation.

Uber's Ripley Program and Protocol
In the report, people with knowledge of Uber's operations say that the system, called Ripley, was a closely guarded secret. The company used it at least two dozen times in situations with authorities in foreign countries, according to Bloomberg .

"The system that we're going to put in place is going to demand a lot from him", Gruden said of Carr, "and I think that's what's going to unlock the greatness in him".

Gruden isn't new to the Oakland Raiders either, since he was their head coach from 1998 to 2001.

Davis also said he had been pursuing Gruden since taking ownership of the team from his late father, Al, six years ago. This has led some to question whether owner Mark Davis took the minority candidates he interviewed seriously, or just went through the motions of the Rooney Rule. While most could return to their team, there's an outside shot the Raiders could make a play.

Gruden was traded to Tampa Bay in 2003 and proceeded to guide the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl championship in his first season.

They weren't going from "giving Jon Gruden $100 million" to "hiring a college offensive coordinator who wasn't qualified to land the college coaching job at his alma mater amidst the most public and embarrassing search in the last half decade".
