Moscow Admits Drones Attacked Hmeimim, Tartus Bases

According to the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation, extremists attacked the Russian airbase in Syria by launching 13 drones from a distance of 50 kilometers.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has called on Russian Federation and Iran to fulfill their obligations under a peace plan for Syria and prevent attacks by Syrian government forces in Idlib Province, saying the violations could not happen without their support.

The attacks have also spurred a flurry of questions over who may be responsible for what amounts to the biggest military challenge yet to Russia's role in Syria, just when Moscow is seeking to wind its presence down.

In December, Putin visited the Khmeimim base and said Russian Federation would start to wind its presence down because the war in Syria is essentially over.

"Russia's military intervention in Syria and its repeated use of the veto at the United Nations Security Council makes Russian Federation a party to the conflict", The Guardian quoted the group as saying.

The Khmeimim has found itself under attack on a number of occasions as the conflict in Syria rages on, with two Russian military personnel killed during a mortar attack on New Year's Eve.

The outlines of a potential new deal appear to be emerging under which Russia agrees to prevail upon the Syrian government to refrain from attacking any more opposition territory and Turkey agrees to prevent the opposition from attacking Russian bases, said Jennifer Cafarella of the Institute for the Study of War.

The Russian military said that the attack originated from the village of Muazzara, which is located in the Idlib region of Syria.

The Russian bases did not suffer any causalities or damage, according to Moscow's ministry of defense.

"Iran and Russian Federation need to carry out their responsibilities".

Putin's pledge to withdraw Russian troops after the alleged defeat of IS in Syria came as the Russian military augmented its operations in support of the Syrian government forces, consolidating their control over rebel enclaves in the country.

Compounding the suspicions, the ministry said in a statement on its Facebook page that a US Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft was in the skies above the area for four hours during the drone assault.

Ankara has supported the anti-Assad opposition throughout the nearly seven-year Syrian civil war while Russian Federation and Iran have backed President Bashar al-Assad.

It is reminded that as agreed in Astana talks by Turkey, Russia and Iran, Turkish military is now deployed in Idlib to set up observation posts and monitor the implementation of de-escalation zones.

While Russia will continue its military intervention, it will at the same time seek a peaceful resolution between the Syrian government and the opposition groups to guarantee its influence in the future of the country, Clarke said.
