Google removes 60 gaming apps with pop-up porn malware from Play Store

The malware, called AdultSwine, displays highly inappropriate and pornographic ads from the web, attempts to trick users into installing fake security apps, or encourages users to register for premium services at their expense. According to Google Play's data, these game apps have been downloaded between 3 million to 7 million times before they were deleted. The attacker then selects which of the above three actions to take and then display on the device owner's screen. The apps were believed to be downloaded on as many as seven million Android devices.

Numerous apps infected with the malware are aimed at children, and some have been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times.

Collectively known as AdultSwine, each application contacted its Command and Control server and received instructions on whether to hide its icon and which ads to display.

The former made batting look easy on an increasingly hard track and in doing so, put on 57 runs for the third wicket with Elgar. But Elgar survived to share an unbroken 87-run partnership with AB de Villiers , who batted confidently to be on 50 not out.

Registering To Premium ServicesAnother technique used by the malicious malware is registering to premium services and charging the victim's account for fraudulent premium services they did not request.

As well as throwing up explicit content, AdultSwine also attempted to trick users into downloading other apps, including dodgy "security" apps that, ironically, promised to help protect the device against malicious content. The ads were often inappropriate and at times pornographic-a fact made particularly troubling as numerous apps were geared toward younger users. I'm not saying it's easy but perhaps there's a case to be made for more rigourous checking of apps to ensure they only behave as prescribed. "Indeed, these plots continue to be effective even today, especially when they originate in apps downloaded from trusted sources such as Google Play", researchers said. A game called "Five Nights Survival Craft", for example, had as many as five million downloads, while a kid-focused app called "Mcqueen Car Racing Game" had been downloaded one million times. Google responded to the revelation by removing more than 60 apps from its app store. The apps weren't part of the household group, which is based on a program that will assist parents to find age-appropriate contents on the Play Store.

A complete list of affected apps is available from Check Point.
