Golden Globes host Seth Meyers mocks Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey

Seth Meyers admitted that he spent a lot of time preparing for the 75th Golden Globes hosting gig to strike the right tone and he went in for disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein in his opening monologue.

"We're all here tonight courtesy of the Hollywood Foreign Press, a string of three words that could not have been better created to infuriate our president".

"Good evening ladies and remaining gentlemen", Meyers said as he started off the evening.

The opening monologue at the Golden Globes can often be more interesting and entertaining than the awards themselves.

"Harvey Weinstein isn't here tonight because, well, I heard rumors that he's insane and hard to work with", Seth, who is hosting the show, told the crowd during his opening monologue. It helped that numerous jokes involved adoring Oprah Winfrey, who was sitting in the front row with Stedman Graham, and Oprah makes everyone feel better. "And I can tell because it's been years since a white man was this nervous in Hollywood". And to deliver the punch line to some of those jokes, Meyers even enlisted the help of some stars in the room, like Jessica Chastain. "It'll sound like that", Meyers kidded.

Hollywood's elite turned the red carpet black Sunday as they arrived at the Golden Globes, the glitzy launch of the entertainment industry's awards season, with sexual harassment scandals casting a long shadow over the party. Is Christopher Plummer available for that, too?

Before the show, he told Variety that he'd focusing more on Hollywood on Globes night, and said that he'd try to tread lightly and try to strike the right balance between amusing and respectful in terms of the gravity of the sexual harassment epidemic. Ridley and the cast and crew of All the Money in the World re-shot all of Spacey's scenes in recent weeks and Plummer was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, although he lost to Sam Rockwell, one of the stars of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

He also mocked Spacey's Southern accent in the show, adding.

"- but those numbers might be off", Chau interrupted, "because a white person did the math". "It's a gay coming-of-age film". You're explaining something I already know.

Making an oblique reference to the exploitation at the upper echelons of Hollywood, Seth Meyers explained why he was chosen to host the awards gala - he described himself as "a man with completely no power in Hollywood". Quoth Meyers: "The only name that could make him angrier is the Hillary Mexico Salad Association".

And Late Night host Seth Meyers, who emceed the event, didn't let the opportunity to poke holes at the showbiz elite pass him by.
