ESPN to honor legendary broadcaster Keith Jackson with marathon of famous games

Keith Jackson, who called play-by-play action in college football for almost 50 years, dies Friday night.

Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger says Jackson "was college football" for generations of fans.

But until that point in 2006 when he finally shucked his headset for good, if you switched on the TV on an autumn Saturday and heard Jackson's modified Georgia twang you were certain there was straw on the floor of his broadcast booth and a milk cow standing next to him. Hi Keith!' When Keith was in town, everybody took notice, because his presence meant it was the game of the day in college football.

Jackson leaves behind his wife Turi Ann, three grown children (Melanie, Lindsey, Christopher), and three grandchildren (Ian, Holly, Spencer).

Jackson informally christened the University of Michigan's cavernous stadium at Ann Arbor "the Big House"; he relished broadcasting the Rose Bowl game, "the granddaddy of 'em all"; and he admired the enormous linemen, who were "the Big Uglies in the trenches".

He covered 10 Winter and Summer Olympics games, including the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

Jackson's resume is a laundry list of iconic games throughout college football history.

Jackson's career started in the early 1950s and he worked in college football all the way until the mid-2000s.

Jackson spent four years in the Marines and later graduated with a journalism degree from Washington State University, where he broadcast the team's games. "For now, I just need to stay on top of it and have to stay fit", McIlroy said.

USA resumes DACA applications after judge blocks end to program
The Department of Justice has indicated it will appeal the judge's decision, a move that could again put the program on hold. Still, he said, "it's a good sign and maybe recipients can file and renew immediately before any appeal or new law".

For more than 50 years Jackson called the action, becoming one of the most beloved play-by-play personalities in the business.

'Keith covered games I played in and we worked together at ABC Sports for decades.

He began calling college football games for ABC Sports after it acquired the broadcast rights for NCAA football in 1966.

That also was the final event for ABC Sports as a separate brand before ESPN absorbed it later that year.

The college football world lost its most prominent voice on Friday night.

Jackson was a part of ABC's expansion of baseball's reach in the 1980s as well, working on the Monday Night Baseball broadcasts, attempting to bring baseball in the regular season into the weekday lineup rather than a weekend-only pigeonhole.

Jackson was on the call for one of the greatest World Series moments ever, when Reggie Jackson hit three home runs off of three pitches in Game 6 to win the 1977 World Series for the New York Yankees.

Jackson is a member of the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame, and called more Rose Bowl games, 15, than any other announcer. Thank you Keith for all the memories and the grace in which you provided them. He was also inducted into the NSSA Hall of Fame in 1995, winning its National Sportscaster of the Year award five times in a row.
