CT boy, 10, dies from flu after going to hockey tournament

Nico Mallozzi, 10, was in Buffalo, NY, with his family for a hockey tournament over the weekend, but he didn't play in any games because he was feeling sick.

Mallozzi was a member of the Connecticut Roughriders Hockey Club.

Nico passed away after leaving a hockey tournament early this past weekend because he had been feeling unwell, district officials have said. His parents chose to take him home, but rushed to the Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo, New York, when he took a turn for the worse.

Mallozzi's brother also tested positive for Type B flu due to which New Canaan Health Department officials urged teammates of Mallozzi to get tested in case they may have been exposed to the virus. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Nico's parents, his sister Marina, and his brothers Joey and Michael, and we stand ready to support each of them in every way possible in the time ahead", wrote Luizzi.

Kelly Beatty, senior editor at Sky and Telescope magazine, said meteors and meteorites are a bit like seashells. Experts say what looked like thunder with a flash of light in the sky above Detroit was likely a meteor .

Luizzi said it's been a hard two days since getting the news about the death of Nico, who attended West Elementary School and played defenseman for the team based out of South Norwalk. "What we do not know, however, is if the Flu caused Nico's passing".

"There are no words to describe the loss we feel", a Mallozzi family statement on the site read.

Schools in New Canaan were closed Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, but Mallozzi's school held a gathering for parents and students to provide information and support.

Luizzi said Nico was a great kid, known throughout the school. "We will miss Nico terribly, and will always cherish our memories of him as a vibrant, fun-loving boy".

The local community has rallied around the Mallozzi family, with a GoFundMe page that has raised more than $121,000. "At this point, it has been confirmed that Nico had been diagnosed with Influenza B, a strain of the Flu that is now spreading in the Northeast".
