Concealers no more! Study shows how you can look young naturally

But can they really help us to look younger?

Researchers from Northwestern University in IL have come to the conclusion that 30-minute daily exercises for facial muscles significantly improve facial appearance and reduce wrinkles.

Don't laugh, because we fully appreciate how ridiculous that sounds. For the first eight weeks, they did the exercises for 30 minutes, daily. "The contour improvement from facial exercise is likely modest but real, and may augment the highly effective, minimally invasive therapies that are now used for wrinkle and volume loss replacement". "Growing the underlying muscle fills and stretches out the saggy facial skin, which with age becomes less elastic and with less fat underneath to plump it up", lead study author Murad Alam, MD, vice chair and professor of dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a Northwestern Medicine dermatologist, explains to Yahoo Lifestyle.

"But if muscle underneath becomes bigger, the skin has more stuffing underneath it and the firmer muscle appears to make the shape of the face more full", noted Emily Poon, an assistant research professor at the varsity. So before we get too excited, this research needs to be replicated in a much larger group.

"Assuming the findings are confirmed in a larger study, individuals now have a low-priced, non-toxic way for looking younger or to augment other cosmetic or anti-aging treatments they may be seeking", said Alam.

Study participants, middle-aged women 40 to 65 years old, underwent two sets of face-to-face 90-minute training sessions from a facial exercise instructor.

The participants performed the facial exercises at home for 20 weeks, completing them for 30 minutes daily for the first 8 weeks, and 30 minutes every other day for the remaining 12 weeks.

If the temperature is below 45 degrees for more than two days, then the reptiles will likely die, mainly from pneumonia. The wildlife commission has begun holding workshops to train homeowners and property managers to trap or manage iguanas.

After 20 weeks of "facial exercise", two dermatologists assessed the participants" "before and after' photographs to assess any changes to their appearances. The dermatologist raters looked separately at 19 features of the face and rated all of those at three different time points: at the beginning, at week eight and at week 20.

Dr Alam added: "That's nearly a three-year decrease in age appearance over a 20-week period".

Of course, this is an incredibly small sample size, and it's limited by being made up exclusively of middle-aged women - we have no evidence as yet that facial yoga would work in other demographics.

But it's promising early evidence that simply by toning our faces like we do our bodies, we could make ourselves look younger.

Facial workouts - also known as "face yoga" - have become popular as a beauty trend in the past few years, as a non-invasive alternative to Botox or surgery. The technique is also said to stimulate collagen and elastin production in the dermis - the middle layer of skin - making the face more supple, tighter and, most importantly, younger looking. Fat pads present in between the muscle and the skin are responsible for providing firmness to the cheeks and keeping a toned shape of the face. "The growing facial muscle partly counteracts the age-related effects of the sagging skin and thinned-out fat".
